Winding down those darkest of days

December 17 – 21:

The winter holiday from school has begun and we are busily getting ready for the celebrations. As the solstice approaches we are really looking forward to seeing the days lengthen.

December 17th – dinner with the family at Uncle Vern’s home.

December 18th – shopping at the outlet mall for family gifts.  It’s 1:40 in the morning and I just finished wrapping the items that we purchased for the boys today.  Joe had a great “friends and family” coupon for the Adidas outlet store (50% off everything) so we splurged a bit.  I even got a new coat.  I think I’ll go sit in the hot tub for a bit and then do a little reading.  I’m reading the Autobiography of Santa Claus again.  It’s such a wonderful book for this time of year.  Tomorrow I need to pick up a few things for Joe’s birthday.

December 19th – Joe’s birthday

I was reading today and decided to honor our Norwegian family roots this holiday season.  I looked into some traditional cookie recipes and found a list that I’m going to try some of:

  • Kokosmakroner
  • Sirupsnipper
  • Pepperkaker
  • Goro
  • Serinakaker
  • Ingefærnøtter (ginger nuts)
  • Fattigmann (Poor Man)
  • Krumkaker (Curved Cake)
  • Tykklefser
  • Hjortetakk (Deer Antlers)
  • Sandkake (Sand Cakes)

December 21st – Solstice Supper
